Essential guide to Vaujany Summer Season

If it is an active holiday you are after you will not be disappointed with the activities on your doorstep in Pourchery, Vaujany and Alpe d'Huez. From cycling and paddle boarding to ice-skating and mountain walking, the list is endless. However if you or some of your group are after a more leisurely break, there is still plenty to do and of course the opportunity to just sit with a good book and enjoy the view.

Road cycling

The area is an unmissable destination for all serious cyclists, whether amateur or professional you can follow in the footsteps of many world famous cyclists. It is hard to choose between the roads with magnificent panoramic views over the valleys, hairpin bends, ascents to high mountain passes or steep climbs up to eagle’s-nest villages.

It’s worth coming just for the 21-switchback climb up to Alpe d’Huez and the less well known routes via Villard Reculas or the Col de Sarenne. There are many other mountain passes such as the Col du Glandon, Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Galibier, Col du Lautaret or the Col d’Ornon to challenge your legs!

The area is well known for The Tour de France which regularly passes through the valley and book early to ensure you have accommodation for the annual  â€˜Marmotte’ and â€˜Vaujany’ events, which are the best-known races in the Alps.

Tennis, ride park and other games at Le Collett

Just a short drive up the mountain is Le Collett (or a free mini train runs regularly from the swimming pool and the centre of Vaujany). The facilities are all free and operate on a first come first served basis and include tennis, archery, frisbee-golf, petanque, giant games and group games.

There is also a Ride Park here and a free bike wash point.  A pump track has raised turns and a mini ramp which can be used by scooters, skates and bicycles.

Mountain biking (MTB)

During the summer the cable car runs taking you high into the mountains and MTB takes on its true meaning: the terrain is seriously steep and some trails weave along ravines, but there are also faster tracks, winding their way between the trees of dense forests or through the pasture land so typical of our mountains. What do they mainly have in common? Scenery that lives up to these outstanding locations and ever higher thrills!

Experienced mountain bikers seeking new thrills will definitely get their money’s worth. There is over 2500m of height with downhill sections that are steep, technical and/or fast, crossing glaciers, meadows and undergrowth that are enough to put any rider through their paces.

For the less adventurous or experienced there are some lovely rides along the valley floor with plenty of opportunities for coffee/ beer breaks.

More summer sports activities

Canoes, kayaks and paddle boards can be rented at very reasonable prices at Lac du Verney, which the chalet overlooks. Other activities on offer in the area include horse riding, water rafting, an accrobranche course (tree top adventure park) and mountaineering (there are two via ferrata that run through Vaujany and 7 in total in the area).

Leisure centre

We would highly recommend a visit to the Espace Loisirs.  There's an Olympic size pool with a superb, long tube slide and a separate children’s paddling pool. The pool backs out onto a lovely sunny terrace so you can sunbathe on the loungers whilst the kids wear themselves out. In addition there is a:

  • Sauna and steam room

  • Sports hall offering a variety of activities including badminton and climbing wall

  • Gym and weights room with 20 machines

  • 4 lane Ten Pin Bowling (book ahead, it is very popular)

  • The Stou bar & restaurant

Ice skating rink & ice hockey

In the same building is the international ice skating rink where you can hire skates. The French teams come to play and practice ice-hockey, we highly recommend you go and watch one of the hockey matches, they are fast, furious and exciting  - but whether winter or summer wrap up as its always cold!

Events calendar

There are always lots of activities and entertainment planned in Vaujany. The Tourist Office publishes a weekly programme many of which are free. The Tourist Office is open every day. Some of the highlights of the summer in Vaujany are the Les Pètardes (vintage car festival) in August, the weekly evening food market on Thursdays in Oz and fireworks at Lac du Verney in July.
